Carrots and Sticks: Promoting Transparency and Sustainability
The Centre for Corporate Governance worked with KPMG, the
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) on an updated version of Carrots and
Sticks: current trends and approaches in voluntary and mandatory
standards for sustainability reporting. Carrots and Sticks was
originally published in 2006 as a joint initiative by KPMG's Global
Sustainability Services (KPMG) and UNEP.
The document was received favourably by various sectors, and
seems to have been most useful to regulators and large corporations
that need to coordinate sustainability reporting activities across
various countries. The current global financial and economic crisis
has sparked renewed interest in regulation, including corporate
governance and disclosure requirements. In addition, the last three
years have seen the introduction of significant changes in terms of
reporting guidelines in many countries. The revision of the
publication also offered the opportunity to include more developing
countries in the project.
The updated publication called Carrots and Sticks - Promoting
Transparency and Sustainability: an update on trends in voluntary
and mandatory approaches to sustainability reporting was launched
at the GRI conference in Amsterdam on 27 May 2010.
